Check out my new web shows and find out." width="525" height="295" />
Does shooting the negative thoughts then replacing them with positive ones work as well as we're told?

For years I’ve been watching how those who claim to assist and train others in being better and more successful and I’ve noticed something. There’s one main thing that they all love to suggest to everyone:

They always advise us to shoot the negative thoughts and replace them with more positive ones.

While I can’t disagree with the main core of that approach entirely I do have trouble with the methodology.

It is true that negative thoughts might cause us to under perform so I’m not against doing something to eradicate them. But the coaches, motivational speakers, and psychologists all sing in the choir of the method known as “thought replacement”.

It works like this:

You identify your negative thoughts and then replace those thoughts with positive ones.

Now, on the surface that sounds pretty simple. Something anyone can do. But wait, there is a problem. Here’s what it is:

It’s a ton of impossible work here’s why.

Research has shown that the average human processes thousands of thoughts per day. That’s a lot of thoughts. Not only that but the experts estimate that of those thoughts about 70 percent of them on average are considered negative.

Hmmm.

Let’s see then. So if you have about 50,000 thoughts per day and 70 percent of them are negative then that’s a boatload of effort to replace all that. Not to mention the fact that as you are busy replacing those thoughts new thoughts are constantly being formed and 70 percent of those are quite possibly going to be negative as well.

If looking at it this way begins to give you negative thoughts about this article then I can’t blame you but read on because there is a workaround for this dilemma.

So, seeing as the task of trading in all those negative thoughts for positive ones is virtually a never-ending one, at least the way that the great personal development gurus are teaching it, I think it’s time for something completely different.

To give this a new shocking perspective I’m going to have to introduce something that many of you have not heard of before.

First though I have to make one key observation. All of the advice that pertains to thought replacement is what I call bead-based. What I mean by that is that the focus is on the brain that’s in the head.

Of course, I do understand why they place such a lot of interest there. Thoughts, either positive of negative ones, appear to be made in that region so it makes sense. The fine old head brain is what people are thinking of when they talk about brains in general. But what if there was more than one set of brains in every human?

Sounds like a weird thing to say I know but the fact of the matter is…

It’s true.

In 1996 a cell biologist Dr Michael Gershon announced to the world through an article in the New York Times that he had found evidence that there is a crude brain in the gut of every human and it can, and does, act on its own.

To me this was big news since I had been using a new system of my own design to boost a person’s potential and to buffer the effects of negative thinking automatically. This system relies on the release of the hidden energy available in the gut brain to soothe the upper brain creating an elegant dual relationship between the two.

I’ll talk more about this in subsequent posts as well as on my free online web shows.

I was reading one of my favorite blogs the other day and Coleen, the blog’s author, had linked to a fine article on the problem of information oversupply.

Instantly some bells rang for me so I’m here writing about it. As I was typing this I was beginning to realize something about what I’m doing right now. I’m adding to the incredible bulk that our age has become known for: The out-of-control growth of the humongous information pile.

That article came to the sad conclusion of what we must now be prepared for. I can tell you, it doesn’t look good.

It turns out that – for me at least – hoping to be considered as “well read” by any known standard is now virtually unattainable. There is just too much to read, watch, listen to, taste, and touch in the world today. More boldly it seems, that to try to fit the requirements for being well read into our pathetically short little lives is just an impossible task for anyone. But thankfully we have two choices of responses to choose from: “culling or surrender”.

The former is for the focused and the latter for the time-maxed.

Personally, I love reading especially since the day my wife and I gave up the idiot box a few years ago. But now I’ve become more mindful that not only am I not going to get to see or hear it all, I’m going to miss almost all of it by default. Lac of time, added by my current snail’s pace of reading and comprehension, will see to that. And, even if by some chance miracle it didn’t, the rate of info overfill would continue on so relentlessly that I’d fall way behind it anyway.

Like looking at a car accident as you pass by it on the highway, it’s absurdly fascinating to see the scale and scope of this world-wide info head-brain overfill. It’s starkly summed up by the article’s author as she looks at the numbers: “Statistically speaking, you will die having missed almost everything.”

Ugh!

As an artist that statement alone is enough to give me visuals. At least it would have if she hadn’t beaten me to it. Her clever use of her literary skill allowed her to end the essay with the imagery that information today is like an ocean and all we are going to be able to get out of it is a paltry little cupful.

That’s another good reason why I recommend making a simple little tweak in your system of thinking. It’s a “brain tweak” that allows for a fundamental change in your focus. It’s now possible to go from information – that’s not only coming to you – but information that’s now coming through you. It’s something I talk about in my free Mobius Effect Webinars and you can learn more about it here

As you may know I’m very into examining the mechanisms behind our self-belief (or lack thereof). In my work I often find corresponding mirror-like operators in each of the two natures we humans have – the physical and the ethereal.

This duality thing is quite fascinating because it informs us of so many unique qualities that underscore the miracle of what it means to be human.

Case in point is the importance of the strength of our individual self-belief (ethereal body) and the level of glucose in our blood (physical body). Both seem to be indicators of the wellness of the systems that they are such a vital part of.

You probably know already that tests for blood glucose levels can be done by yourself at home using a glucose meter but what about a test for our own strength of self-belief?

I suppose a meter would be a cool thing to have for this too but that might be a bit of a tough thing to come up with since self-belief exists only in the domain of the ethereal.

Fortunately there is a reliable less outwardly mechanical way that helps give us an indication of the level of our deep self-belief and each of us already have it in our possession.

It’s the little known brain in the gut called the ‘enteric nervous system’.

Now, not everyone has heard that humans have another brain in their body besides the one in the head. Can’t say I’m surprised at that. I didn’t learn of it myself until 1996 and that was just by chance. A friend of mine had told me that there was an article on it in the New York Times science section.

It blew me away when I read it.

I had for years been trying to tell people that I thought there existed something like a base of operations for a motivational source that seemed to emanate from the gut area of the body. At the time there was a label in wide use back then calling this area the “solar plexus”. This seemed a descriptive term for it I suppose because it was recognized that there were a large mass of nerve endings in this area that seemed to (sort of) radiate out from a central area like the sun’s rays.

This description, although fancifully romantic wasn’t very accurate medically. It was really just a boxing term for all the nerves identified in that area. When finally found it the name “enteric nervous system” was coined for it by it’s discoverer Dr. Michael Gershon.

The one thing that distinguishes this brain from the one in the head? Well, besides the obvious location differences it has one overriding feature: it’s a feeling not a thinking brain.

So, to test your personal self-belief, all you need to do is tune in to how your gut feels about your next big decision and if you feel you can trust the direction it’s pointing you in.

Be warned though. Where it takes you to may not at first seem like a good thing. But remember… successful conclusions often come with long timelines. Of course, that’s why you need a sense of deep self-belief in the first place.

More power to you my friends.
<itunes:summary>Mobius Monday Minute – May 30 , 2011

I see things.

No I’m not saying that I “see” strange things. I don’t for example see a boogie-man hiding under my bed or anything like that. Nothing so weird or dramatic that it would be such that you might imagine streaming from the likes of Stephen King or Alfred Hitchcock.

Sorry to disappoint.

Please understand it’s just that my job demands that I see things. I was trained as a graphics guy you see. I studied as a visual artist and graduated from art college back when desk-top computers were still in short pants. I had a lot of catching up to do in that department but that’s another story.

What I’ve been working on for the last 30 years or so was trying to come up with a way to visually understand a phenomenon that we all experience at one time or another: The moment when a peculiar drive kicks in causing us to create a successful conclusion. We know it as persistence, determination, perseverance, or doggedness… take your pick.

Of course there is a more generalized word for it. One that describes the entire landscape that I wish to “see” more clearly in three dimensions. That term is the ever-familiar phrase ”human potential”.

Know how I see it?

It’s an ocean. I say that because, like the five physical oceans on this planet, it’s huge (and even liquid-like) in its nature. In fact it’s incomprehensibly huge. It’s so huge a pattern that it won’t even fit into the boundaries of the human brain.

Not only is its sheer size problematic but it’s weirdness is troublesome as well. I mean, if you consider it, how can you describe something in words that does not lend itself very well to fitting into the terms of reference we might otherwise use in our daily lives?

That’s why I’m glad I found out about the mobius strip. It’s a shape that is the perfect metaphor of the impossible becoming possible. I figure that human potentiality must have been born in a shell with a shape like this. Just look at it. It’s got the weirdness thing down pat. A simple two-dimensional object that occupies three-dimensional space? I need to put a cold cloth on my noggin just to think about it for more than a few minutes.

But I’ll make it easier for you.

Just consider the video posted here.

A young violinist, who just happens to be deaf, is forced to make a choice and close her eyes to the notes she’s playing and see the beauty of the music in her soundless world through the realm of shapes and colors. In the greatest moment of need these are delivered to her quieted ears through the most gut-felt drive of persistence and determination. Working so fully-engaged with her potential she triumphs over all adversity.

Now that’s the best pair of ears I ever heard of wouldn’t you say?

More power to you.

If The Beatles song “I Want To Hold Your Hand” hadn’t come out just a bit before Lesley’s song would have been #1 on the charts instead of the #2 position it held for many weeks.

But this is not about pop music it’s about personal development.

It’s about how much the biggest leaders in personal development love ‘owning’ a lot of people and teaching them to depend on their every spoken holy word.

In most businesses repeat customers are certainly a nice steady meal ticket. I usually buy my gas at the same gas station. That’s no problem. I burn up the stuff driving around in my car. It’s a consumable product.

But this industry is one with a reputation built on promises to fix you up for life. So why do you think their clients need constant repeat applications?

Maybe it’s like a lot like healthcare. A lot of doctors are not in the health business. They’re in the sickness business.

Sorry, I can’t play that game. With what I offer you just need it once and once only. Can’t even buy it a second time if you wanted to. That’s the beauty of having a new immunity.

Perhaps you should have heard Lesley’s message delivered 49 years ago. Here it is again.

More power to you.

You’ve had them, your best friend, wife, or husband has had them. Certainly your parents, teachers, and peers have had them too. I know I’ve had a few of ‘em and for me its mostly because I stumbled along and became something I never intended to become.

A pioneer.

You who have been around the block awhile know the old saying: pioneers end up with arrows in their backs – settlers end up with the booty.

See but I couldn’t help it. Ever since I can remember I’ve always been very interested in newness. And it’s led me to this.

Being a pioneer by mefault.

Let me give you some background.

My dad was a successful doctor and so he was his own boss. But he worked in the same small set of offices for over 30 years – his entire career. It was the same office he first had when a young doctor out of med school. He even lived in it until he had enough money to buy his first house marry my mother. It was located in an older medical building where the wood floors creaked and the hallways and tired elevator had a stinky musty medical smell to them.

In the end that medical practice, the same one where not one of his children was near qualified or even faintly interested in ever taking over, became a bit of a dog to unload before he could retire for good.

Personally, I didn’t want it because it seemed so routine, too complicated technically and kinda boring. Besides, I never even got close to a med school never mind serving 12 odd years to train for the job they call doctor. High school was enough for me.

I liked newness.

So I went to college and trained in graphic art and design. At least the school was new and we were encouraged to create new ideas and that suited me fine. It was interesting and, if you got into the right advertising company, it could be a lucrative career too.

So that’s what I did. But early on I followed my dad’s lead and decide to work for myself after working for another guy for just a year or so. Now, because I was in business for myself, I learned real soon that I’d better work on myself first and that meant getting into the self-development thing big time.

To make a long one short after a while I got quite disenchanted with the poor results I got from all that reading and learning and practicing. I started to investigate the field of personal growth more closely and eventually stumbled onto what would later become my cardinal contribution to this field. The H.E.R.O. eMachine.

But having something created is just half the battle. Still have to get it “out there” in the public awareness. That’s when I realized I’d unwittingly become a pioneer in a whole new segment of this industry.

Something I call, playfully, “organic” personal development because it delivers natural gut-based motivational mysteries that guys like Napoleon “Shill” could only talk about in books. I had conquered the barrier of the imagined for the realness of a new open mysterious portal of intelligence and energy. All of it emerging from deep inside.

But now I had the problem that all pioneers have: cutting an uncharted path through the rugged countryside where there was no path before. Lots of slings and arrows came my way and some found their mark.

For example, at one point my wife and I lost all we had when the bank came and shut down our fledgling goat dairy. After that I was diagnosed with a serious hyper thyroid disease. At the time we we’re both in our mid to late 50’s. Not exactly a good time to seek out a new career.

We’ve gotten over those traumas though so I’m not looking for sympathy here. No, not by a long shot. In fact we’ve both laughed at least once every day right through the whole time of it.

Couldn’t help ourselves. Natural joy and freedom from over-worry is part of the effects of using this invention just once. That’s the kind of thing that H.E.R.O. delivers from the inside of you to the outside instead of the other direction.

That’s been part of the problem. Great results but, till just recently couldn’t explain it very cogently. Better for me if it didn’t work at all – at lease then I could choose to move on to something else the hell with helping others find this most unusual source of adaptability.

At least then I could shake this pioneer career and maybe look for a position as a settler.

Or, maybe not. After all every day even one of “those” kinds… has a newness in it.

As usual I’d love to hear your ideas, thoughts and questions in the comments area below.

More power to you.
