This morning I was listening to the radio morning show on CBC. Every week they have a medical doctor on and he reports on some interesting findings from the world of medicine. According to the good doctor in past years lots of medical doctors and nurses showed up for work even if they knew they had a flu or cold. They thought that they were being of more service to their patients then not being there for them at all.

Of course, the fact that one sneeze can send out over 40,000 droplets of water full of active viruses into the office air, and could therefor easily spread the disease to the other patients, wasn’t fully considered that big a problem. After all the thinking back then was that no one was ever going to die from a cold or flu.

But that was before H1N1 cam along. That changed things forever and it’s a different story now.

But this is a blog is about mindset not medicine so I do need to draw a connection here and so here it is.

No matter if they be they embodied in physical viruses or negative thoughts damaging factors can easily spread, populate, and infect new hosts in very similar ways. For example, in offices everywhere managers have noticed that it only takes one worker voicing negativity to bring down the well-being of the entire work group.

Sound familiar?

That to me is a clear indication that thinking systems mirror the physical system as seen in the body. But the body has an advantage. It’s got an immune system that, if maintained in health, does an excellent job of handling invading pathogens on a daily basis. Unfortunately the one corrective system that I believe is present in the mindset is itself very slow acting.

So slow in fact as to appear to not be present at all. That leaves the thinking much more susceptible to negative invaders. In fact studies show this to be true. Our daily thoughts, they report, are on average about 70% negative.

So what kind of flu are you helping to spread?

More Power to you.

But I have the same problem that I know a lot of other bloggers do. It’s all about with coming up with ideas to write blog posts about. I tend to edit myself too much. That inhibits my ability to just start. It can be debilitating. Then, just the other day, I came across the brilliant blogger Elizabeth Potts Weinstein. She wrote a post about that very problem.

“Just write” she advised. “Don’t think.”

Now I’ve heard that before from other writing instructors but I escaped the message’s integrity to turn the advice into action. Until Elizabeth PW came up with her post. She said it so eloquently. So powerfully that, to me at lest, it just resonated in my bones.

So as of today I’m going to re-fire my resolve to become an accomplished writer (well ok maybe a dedicated blogger at least). I need to do it for me and for you too. If I don’t how will my gifts to the world be known?

In my work with the theory of mindset immunity it requires me to describe certain aspects of what was a mystery. A deep unknown. However because I was fortunate enough to break through the egg shell of this mystery along time ago I have always thought I would be able to at least open up the discussion about what it was that I’ve found.

But I was not a writer. I was not a psychologist. I was not a lot of things. In fact I hated writing in high school. Couldn’t believe how anyone could sit down and write a whole book. I always thought that those who pursue a career as writers must be very special ( or weird) to withstand that kind of punishment. I’ve even heard that before one can describe themselves as a true writer they must write at least 10 books first.

Holy crap!

Now I sort of hope that’s not true but I decided to hedge my bets. From now on come hell or high water I’m going to take Elizabeth PW’s sage advice and write something every day.

I don’t know what will happen.

Maybe there will be some days when I produce pure crap but I now know that it’s just part of the process. I have a small laptop by my bedside and so I’m going to use that to do this work every day before I even get out of bed.

That’s a promise that I make to you and to myself.

Ok, now that I’ve set the law in the stone of my soul I will start today’s post with a little item I heard on the CBC morning radio show called the “Early Edition”. Once per week they have this medical doctor speak on some facet of his profession.

Today his story was about a few very small studies that have been carried out on the use of some drugs that first appeared on the scene in the 1960’s. I was a teen then, and while I wasn’t much into recreational drugs I was aware of them. Anyway the story today was that some psychologists were doing these studies by using small amounts of the drug that back in the day were known as magic mushrooms. They had some active chemical that produced hallucinations and, although I don’t know why anyone would want to get that pie-eyed, some people back in the 60’s must have thought that hallucinating out of control was some kind of fun.

Anyway today we know more now about how the brain works. Turns out that brain cells talk to each other through chemicals called neurotransmitters. This class of chemicals can apparently be measured. One such chemical is serotonin and they found that depressed people have a low rate of serotonin activity.

It’s an oversimplification but they say that too much serotonin causes hallucinations and too little causes depression.

This is interesting to me because for a long time I’ve had people who have used my H.E.R.O. seminar say that they are no longer depressed. In fact after using the H.E.R.O. eMachine just once it really looked like depression was the first thing to disappear. Now I‘m not a psychologist nor am I even close to being one so I don’t advertise this result too loudly.

But now I’m wondering.

What if levels of serotonin were measured in H.E.R.O. participants who say they experienced depression. What if, after they used H.E.R.O. these levels increased in a way that was natural and followed the natural balancing act that we see in the body’s mechanism that causes equilibrium. The state known as homeostasis? What would that mean?

In depression it looks like the low activity of serotonin is like a form of death and indeed it probably feels like death to those who suffer from it. But what if I’ve stumbled upon a natural agent that safely speeds up serotonin activity (or slows it down if it’s overactive) without the side effects of a drug that may be very addictive?

By the way that addictive thing was why the government banned these drugs back in the 60’s and put a halt on any further research into their effects in mental health. Especially since its usage spilled out into recreational street usage.

As I say, I’m not a doctor but what if a study carried out in a proper clinical setting found what I suspect to be real medical benefits from using a tool that is drugless and natural?

Are you a daring doctor operating in this field who would like to look into this? Will anyone come forward to fund research like this? I have my doubts of course. The idea that a simple workshop like H.E.R.O. could be used just once and get an effect like that is a real threat to those who promote and profit from the sale of manufactured drugs. It is after all big business.

Oddly, but realistically, illness is a huge business so I won’t hold my breath waiting for any action on this. I really only wanted to write a blog post today after all not save the world.

More Power to you.

So what am I doing writing about trans fats? There is a story here.

Not that long ago my wife and I went to the grocery store to pick up a few things. We soon found ourselves in the dairy isle so we got our cheese, sour cream, and some yogurt. Then we got to the butter. “Where’s the butter?” I asked her as if she would know. There wasn’t any. The shelf was bare. Seems there was a sale on butter and, since this was latter in the day, other customers had run off with it.

Our only alternative was the other brand and it was about twice the cost of the house brand that was on sale.

But by now I was hooked on getting a deal and we did need butter. So the only other choice was something that is not even a dairy product. It’s margarine, that molecular mash-up that often stands-in up to four times as often as butter in many families’ refigerators. Same color, similar consistency, and it even has the same packaging as butter. The one pound square this I got comes dressed in that familiar paper wrapper and its even exactly the same size as a pound of butter.

But of course it’s not the same.

It’s margarine. The label says that on the front. On the back is its ingredients and nutritional info including the trans-fat percentage. This is the thing that’s been linked to many diseases including some types of cancer. It’s a molecular freak that the body simply can’t use. If it tries to it will turn it into something even more deformed.

Now that I’ve had a chance to research it a bit I find that it’s probably closer to being plastic than food. Nothing will grow in it. Leave it out and no pesky flies will go near it. Won’t rot or smell weird if left out either. It’s definitely not butter.

So why did I buy it?

I was skunked by price. Outmaneuvered by the marketing and seduced by easy availability.

Sounds familiar? Many do it every day when they pick up a great book of advice, positive quotes, or read stories of successful people. Get their shot of motivation for the day to help them overcome a tough situation or just help them figure out what to do next.

What else can they do?

Real authentic passion and mindset immunity is in short supply. It’s rarity makes it expensive in time and effort to find it too. So we stick with the mind-candy even though we know that it’s addictive and eventually leads to system breakdowns. It’s loaded with trans-fat thinking that:

is extrinsic, it doesn’t come from you it comes at you

clogs the pathways of good clear creativity with rules and “guidelines” that are not your own

it’s not natural to you so it may not quite fit and it doesn’t last very long

it’s just cheap and instant and requires little work to get because there’s lot’s of vendors out there who are ready to give it to you

I’ve read some of those trans-fatty books. I know what they are like but I now know better.

Glad I’m finished with this post. Now I can go to my fridge, reach in for that chunk of margarine, and chuck it in the garbage trans-fats and all.

More power to you all.

Madiba is not a name most of you will recognize right of the bat.

I didn’t.

That’s because, for one thing, I’m not South African and for another I didn’t take the time to closely educate myself about the man whose unfailing belief in his cause changed his whole country first and later the world.

If you just look at the picture on this page you’ll know right away who Madiba is.

Just in case you’re wondering (and I didn’t know this myself either till I found it here) the other name of this man is of course Nelson Mandela. Madiba is an honorary title adopted by elders of his clan.

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the day that he walked out of prison a free man after being locked up for an entire third of his life (Mandela is now 91).

What kind of strength of mindset does it take to survive 27 years in a prison cell and then come out of it and not seek vengince on those who condemded him to all those years?

I only have a clue.

…But

It’s not just positive thinking (although that might help)

It’s not deep-breathing excercises (though that’s a good one for health)

It’s not keeping really busy doing something else (though I think he certainly did that too)

It’s all of those things and something more. Something natural and a mystery at the same time.

A phenomenon really.

I have a name for it. I call it Mindset Immunity

It kept him from becoming a bitter and resentful beast.

It does it for you too if you’re very lucky to have it strike your insides.

Happy anniversary Madiba!

More power to you.

It is being reported that at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax Nova Scotia has hired a psychologist to take care of emergency patients that complain of pain but don’t seem to have any physical symptoms.

What to do? Send him/her home telling them that they’re crazy and, “Oh, by the way, please don’t come back”?

No. That would not do.

This hospital has something better.

They refer the patient immediately to the hired talk-therapist to quiet the person down.

“Intensive, short-term dynamic psychotherapy” they call it. After the session they then send them home without telling them they’re crazy (but still thinking that they might be).

Apparently it must be working. The hospital now reports:

“Helping people recognize the link between their physical symptoms and their stress or emotions resulted in a 69 per cent drop in repeat visits to the emergency room by patients in this group. Hospital visits dropped from an average of almost 4.6 visits a year to 1.4 visits a year, the researchers found” says the report.

As an example they say that they saw an 80 per cent drop in panic attacks with just a single interview.

Plus:

The average treatment was completed in just 3.8 sessions

patients reported a high degree of satisfaction.

For every 100 people seen by the staff psychologist, there will be 300 fewer emergency visits a year, which adds up to a huge savings and reduction in unnecessary tests

Wow.

Sure sounds good alright.

I wonder though.

I used to live in a government town while growing up and I can tell you that if a government sponsored agency spends public funds the suits in the corner offices will be heavy on building a good story that backs their decisions.

I’m not saying that they’re not getting results, they may indeed be. But it’s been shown time and again that left to our own devices many of us humans will recover on our own, in due time anyway, without intervention. I’ve read about studies that detail surprising findings. Like the one that showed that subjects who go through the AA 12 step program could actually get better results by doing nothing at all.

In the good old days (100 years ago) anxiety used to be handled by the sufferer. He just talked with friends or family who just told him that he’s not going bananas and that everything is going to be ok “so get back to work and plow your field of corn you puff-cake!.

The big problem is no one’s got very many close friends any more.

Now we’ve got to pay a pro to do what used to come freely.

If we have to use the psych services why not do what the good doctors are doing in England. There they have so much demand for mental health services that they decided to work out of the box for a change.

To meet the demand a patient can now log on to a special internet site and, his appointment is handled by “talking” to his psychiatrist who could be sitting at home or in his fancy office sipping his tea.

The patient simply types away and, with his own descriptions, gives the details the problem.

Here’s what happens a surprising number of times:

Turns out that the patient, who can now see his whole story in black and white, and in his own words, often begins to recognize that his “problem” doesn’t amount to a hill o’beans in the scheme of things and he soon begins to feel better.

Now I’m sure you may have noticed that on this site that I promote the idea that there exists another immune system in the human person that works to control out of control thinking. The only problem with it is that it works very slowly.

So slowly in fact that it appears to not work at all sometimes.

I think I have something that can fix that.

We mostly work with entrepreneurs and wannabes because it’s tough to get through the learning curve without driving over the edge sometimes.

All we do is show them how to use our on-line “machine”. By doing that they seem to get so confident in themselves they feel that they can take on the world with ease. It takes less than a day to complete and results are permanent.

They end up having a mindset that won’t get offset.

More power to you.

Thinking is something all of us do plenty of every day.

The question is: How does our thinking effect how we “are”? (Such as our state of health for example)

Generally speaking thinking comes in just two sizes: positive and negative.

Let’s take a quick look at positive thinking first.

According to author Deepack Chopra “thoughts become biology”. If this is true then it follows that if you’re consistently thinking negatively your body will be expressing this attitude in its own state of health. Indeed patients who have a poor outlook about their recovery seem to impede the healing process taking place within them

But positive thinking patients don’t always automatically do well just because they think good thoughts.

For example, after radical bone cancer treatment, one-legged cross-Canada runner Terry Fox, had to interrupt his “Marathon Of Hope” and was again back in hospital after cancer was found in his lungs. Publicly he always said that he would soon return to finish the run but, sadly, never did. He died soon afterwards at the age of just 23.

So, does how we “think” soon become how we “are” physically?

The jury is still out and the debate rages on.

Want my two cents?

I think it’s not just thought that can appear to affect our biology but the state of our nature. A positive nature is not quite the same domain as a mind that only works to positive think on demand.

Having a positive nature is way more organic. It is a state that is established more from what you ‘feel’ inside of you than what your head can think up. Compare the two and thinking just doesn’t cut it at all.

The old maxim I often quote here is the famous mantra “Be, Do, Have”. A state of “being” is a powerful thing not subject to the rapid changes often found in our thoughts or in the attitudes formed by them. Interestingly, a positive nature is something that as very young children we almost all possess.

In my H.E.R.O. workshops conducted over the last thirty years or so, I have witnessed many participants who have declared that they felt more youthful and indeed went on to become better at being themselves. It seems that when we’re closer to a state of joy we are naturally more open to maintaining a healthy, more youthful body too.

Till next time, more power to you all.
