He’s commenting on one of my key themes: External motivation versus internal motivation. He doesn’t go into the topic at length of course, that’s not his blogging style. He likes short and pithy and he is the best in the world at it.

He just ends the post with this and it struck me.

“The nature of our new economic system, that one that doesn’t support predictable factory work, is that external motivation is far less useful. If you’re looking for a big payday, you won’t find it right away. If you’re depending on cheers and thank yous from your Twitter followers, you’re looking at a very bumpy ride.
In fact, the world is more and more aligned in favor of those who find motivation inside, who would do what they do even if it wasn’t their job. As jobs turn into projects, the leaders we need are those that relish the project, that jump at the chance to push themselves harder than any coach ever could.”

In isolation this is about work. It’s about industry. He doesn’t actually say it (it’s really not his department anyway) but I don’t think he knows how to exactly engender internal motivation that overcomes the external. How to make the gut strength motivation deeper and more pervasive than that which comes from the brain topside.

He’s not alone. Most every coach, counselor, or guru who’s trying to do it is on the wrong track. Often they fail to see that the motivation they’re supplying to their client is just yet another external motivating factor. Like a bird chirping on a tree branch or the sound of a wave hitting the beach. It’s still from the outside. It’s external.

Not surprising that they don’t see it for what it is though.

Internal motivating ques are very subtle and personal. Who gathers around the water cooler to talk about their gut feeling? Almost no one.

Too bad though. That one phenomenon is the basis of the new immunity that I’ve been writing about for some time now. The point I always make is simple but, as the old saying goes “still waters run deep” and this is no exception. It’s taken me years to give this voice so that I can explain it to people.

I think the era of the great motivator standing up on stage getting everyone going is now just about over. I don’t think people will go on paying big money for that same stuff for too much longer. Same with the calm-talk of the “spiritual teacher” sitting there answering questions while attendees hang on his/her every word. It’s more personal now. It’s got to be. There’s just too much to contend with already.

All they’ve got is mostly just more words. Words that form ideas that motivate people. That’s how it’s been done for centuries. It’s about as old hart as it get’s

But now that model is in real trouble as our difficulties with a changing world catch up with us. Seth is smart enough to notice this new trend. So, how about you?

[Would you like to hear more about what I’ve got to say on this topic? Sign-up here and get a free limited release MP3 download of my 90 minute conversation with copy guy extraordinaire Donnie Bryant. I hold nothing back and this call is jam-packed with information about my H.E.R.O. project that I haven’t ever released on this blog before.

More power to you.

“When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on.” -Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Quotivation Day #3 November 26, 2010

Today’s quotivation is from Franklin Delano Roosevelt (January 30, 1882 – April 12, 1945 also known by his initials, FDR) was the 32nd President of the United States and a central figure in world events during the mid-20th century, leading the United States during a time of worldwide economic crisis and world war

His message re-iterates the long standing dictum that all motivators promote: Don’t you quit!

The one thing that get’s people to a place where they make the decision to give up is, not really so much about how tough it is, but the length of time that must be endured between the starting point and the successful finish point.

The sad truth is none of us like unending pain. We’ll do anything to avoid it. In fact, one thing that researchers know about humans is that we are not all that rational when it comes to what discomforts us. We actually hate to lose more than we like to gain and that is a factor that kills a lot of new entrepreneurs from continuing to pursue their dream of financial and time independence as well as personal autonomy.

Of course the entire personal development industry is dedicated to correcting this problem. But they are just about out of rope themselves. That’s because over the last 100 years the message “don’t you give up” has been so over-repeated that it’s lost most of its ardor.

As usual the old 80/20 rule applies. Only 20 percent can ever get to the point where they overcome enough to actually call it a real success the other 80 percent are left hanging.

But I like working with the end-of-the-ropers. For one thing they have usually come to the point where they have rejected a lot of the extraneous BS that is so common in the personal development industry.

All I have to do then is deliver real truth for a change. Not some wordy truth but a gut-based strength type truth that they can both feel and see as well. A truth that’s tied firmly to the one single enduring attribute that guarantees that we finish what we start every time: PERSISTENCE.

So… if you’re nearing the end of your rope here’s how you can tie a big knot in it and find the key to surviving over time.

More power to you my friend.

Belief is a powerful thing. It can define a life in either direction be it good or bad.

But belief is established two ways: via argument or hard evidence.

A really good argument could be made about the finding that fire burns. All sorts of facts could be brought to bear to reinforce the argument that if you put your finger near a lit match you’ll be burned by its heat.

But an argument, no matter how well it’s put together can’t hold a candle to hard evidence. I can tell you all sorts of things but it’s only if you try it yourself that it really hits home.

“I just burned my finger!” is the discovery of a fact that builds instant belief and nothing can change that. A belief like that will be there till the end of days because it’s tactile and sensory perception creates realness.

Mindset is trickier. It can build a seemingly credible belief even though the evidence to back it up is only imagined. So, if you think you can’t do a thing you are right about that. Chances are you’ll unknowlingly conduct yourself in ways that only add to this belief making it so strong that it seems to become a part of who you are.

You probably won’t even try after that.

But, of course, there are rare exceptions. Eugene the 37 year old librarian is in the class of one or two percent that actually takes a chance to get their day in the sun.

He believed he could do it and he was right. It will be for him an unforgettable moment.

…More power to you my friends.

“a statement or proposition that seems self-contradictory or absurd but in reality expresses a possible truth.”

One day over 50 years ago a group of physicists were talking over lunch at the Los Alamos National Laboratory located out in the New Mexico desert. The conversation got around to the strong possibility that extra-terrestrial civilizations exist in the universe.

<!--[if gte mso 10]> <mce:style><!

One of the scientists Enrico Fermi wondered aloud: if indeed the conditions were favorable for the existence of extra-terrestrials why have they not been identified or, at the very least, their radio transmissions detected?

This one penetrating question sparked a debate that is still going on today, in and outside of scientific circles.

It’s a great question but it’s not got a lot to do with the subject of mindset has it?

Not so fast.

Personally, I’m not about to wade into the debate over whether or not extra-terrestrials exist; but nonetheless there is a connection here to what I call the Mindset Paradox.

Check this out.

We’ve all heard that an average human being is the host to an abundance of intelligence. Trouble is that about 95% of it seems to be nearly impossible to access most of the time. That means that as humans we’ve managed to come up with the electric motor, theory of relativity, the transistor, and the Barbie Doll – and all of it with only 5% of available intelligence.

Now here’s my paradoxical question:

If all this potential intelligence is said to be residing in humans already where is it all hiding?

Now for a while there I thought I knew. DNA – the wonder molecule – had to have it since it knows how to put a human being together exactly the right way with all its billions of individual parts. That’s a tremendous amount of info. In fact it has been estimated that if all the information that DNA contained were ever put into book form it would amount to whole truckload of encyclopedias.

Scientists, for obvious reasons, wanted to get to the bottom of it all too. Eventually they set out to investigate. They planned to deconstruct the tightly wound strands that made up the marvelous molecule and break it right down to its base elements then analyze each one.

And what did they find?

Not much it turns out.

The basic constituent parts of this brainy molecule are nothing special. Quite common in fact. Curiously, the inquisitive researchers found more empty space than matter deep within DNA and embarrassingly had to admit that it appeared that life itself seemed to spring from… nothing.

According to author Dr. Deepack Chopra it was like tearing a radio’s wiring apart to find out where the music is coming from.

But I have another theory.

I imagined that those researchers that deconstructed the DNA molecule must have had to develop a very specialized tool that would allow such delicate dissection. I wanted to find the missing intelligence too so I could access it for myself because I figured it would lead to more success in my life and perhaps a few others along the way too.

Eventually I hit upon the idea that it had to be expressed in the behavior of a success event. (Just to be clear a “success event” occurs when we overcome all barriers and push through to completion of a task - even a simple one qualifies.)

Like those scientists I too needed a special tool. But the one I needed would have to help me perform the detailed deconstruction of one each of each of my past personal success events and lay out its inner secrets for me to absorb. (Although I had actually stumbled on and used such a tool years before but didn’t know what I had. I went on to develop it further and now I call the H.E.R.O. eMachine.)

When you deconstruct something as airy as a human experience you don’t get molecules, or proteins, or subatomic particles. You get nothing any eye can see no matter how powerful the microscope. You get raw energy in the form of vibrations that only the most sensitive part of you can detect:

Your enteric nervous system, better known as your gut brain.

This organ of sensitivity is what governs all really great decisions and insights. It’s what makes us just know that what the thinking brain in the head is looking at is truth, or not.

Strange as it might sound I believe that the head brain is the thinking-but-not-the-feeling brain and the gut brain is the feeling-but-not-the thinking brain. The fact that these two distinctly separate brain centers co-exist in one body is perhaps the greatest of all paradoxes.

What do you believe? Leave a comment in the comment box below. I’d love to know what you think of this.

If you need help with finding the answer you could just search on the net for the name Rufus Harley.

Rufus knew a thing or two about what’s possible and what’s not. You see, he spent a good part of his life branding himself as “the world’s first jazz bagpiper”.

Did a great job of it too despite some… ugh “difficulties”. Rufus, you see, is not the typical bagpiper you might visualize standing in a Scottish Highland. Rufus was an African-American.

Picture it: A black adult 6-foot-2 man dressed in a bright red kilt, sometimes in a dashiki and a Nigerian kufi, playing jazz with all the passion you’d expect of a great jazz performer and you’d be looking at Rufus Harley.

Starting in November of 1963 when he watched the funeral procession of John F. Kennedy on television, with the mournful wail of the sound of the Black Watch Pipe Band resonating within his soul, he was hooked. He found his first set of bagpipes in a pawn store and couldn’t even get a sound out of them at first but after many months of practice he was ready. He then went on to perform with some of the greats like saxophonists like Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon and Sonny Stitt, with the trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and with the flutist Herbie Mann.

He even went on to travel the world as the unofficial goodwill ambassador of his home town of Philadelphia. He billed himself overseas as a “messenger of peace” who liked to hand out miniature copies of the Liberty Bell to heads of state when ever he got the opportunity.

Talk about getting into and being your message.

He even ended up on top TV shows like ” Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show” and Bill Cosby’s “Cosby Show.”

Rufus died at age 70 on August 1, 2006 in Philadelphia, his hometown.

I play bass drum in a pipe band. The link is a remote one but that’s the closest I think I’ll ever come to the likes of Rufus. He reminds us that some things may look impossible but if you’re willing to become your passion quitting is not even on the table.

It’s just not what a mindset like that is made of.
