“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that’s why we recommend it daily.” -Zig Ziglar

Welcome to this edition of “Quotivations” for December 17, 2010.

Usually every Friday I choose quotes that I think are motivating or inspiring. But today I’m doing something a little different.

Rather than being motivating I found this quote, from one of the original key figures of modern day Self-help, to be a less then a subtle complaint about one of the biggest faults of his positive motivational product.

It doesn’t last.

Never has and never will.

Poor old Zig. He’s been at this self-help game since before the earth was done cooling. A defensive quote like this one appears to bring out the curmudgeon in him.

It’s total spin though.

But there is something I’ve got to give him credit for. He’s always been good at adding a touch poetry to make his message more memorable. Remember the famous line “Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude”. Clever stuff like that sells well and it sure did for multi-millionaire Zig Ziglar.

But I still don’t buy it.

Want poetry? How about this: “Disable the fable about motivational spinners making you able”.

Ok, maybe it’s not as good as Zig can do it but, hey, I’m still working on it.

I believe that the real reason why motivation appears not to last very long is because of the type of motivation that’s being delivered.

What doesn’t last is the typical self-motivation injected toward your head-brain by clever artful dodgers like Zig.

Now, don’t get me wrong here, anyone who’s been at for over forty years, like Zig has, deserves some respect. I’m sure he’s helped some people along the path.

But we need some hard truth here.

The problem is that Zig, like all of his compadres today, did not and has not been able to recognize that there is another overriding motivational force that comes from the gut and powers through all the head-brain muddle causing a desired goal to be achieved despite all the great motivational sayings.

That energy, we refer to it sometimes as persistence and determination, cannot and does not originate in the head brain. It’s strictly a property of the gut brain (scientifically known as the enteric nervous system).

The problem with trying to change thoughts from negative to positive is that as humans we have a slight negativity bias to start with and the head-brain, which is always open to messages from the eyes and ears, can’t avoid reverting to and taking on the polarity of whatever has the greater amount.

In other words, there is a lot of negatively charged media fighting for attention with the positive stuff (poetry notwithstanding). It usually swings back to the negative side because that is often the default setting. Negative is also the polarity a lot of our perceptions happen to have about how our existence is treating us.

For example, you could be studying one of Zig’s great books and feeling very positive about your day. That’s until some jerk cuts you off in traffic or you get a flat tire on your way to work and suddenly bamm! just like that you’re back to where you started. You need to bathe your brain again in more positive juice.

The fundamental Problem…

It’s taken me a lot of years but I can now describe the fundamental problem with just three words: lack of immunity.

See the mindset is constantly under attack by our negative perceptions of our situation. But the body’s physical immune system is primarily a buffer against the attacks of pathogens and most of the time it works quite well.

But mindset immunity is another animal all together. It’s not physical it’s ethereal because thoughts are ethereal. The problem with it is that it’s too weak and too slow acting in most people to act like much of a buffer. But, here’s the good news:

I’ve found a way to fix that with this.

Not one of the best head-based motivators working today has ever thought of this approach before. If they did they’d have to change their whole business model to include one where they only deliver the result just once and it sticks.

Like I do.

They wouldn’t want to ever do that though. If they did their business could end up taking a bath… daily.

That’s it for today, consider yourself “quotivated”.

More power to you.

This morning I was listening to the radio morning show on CBC. Every week they have a medical doctor on and he reports on some interesting findings from the world of medicine. According to the good doctor in past years lots of medical doctors and nurses showed up for work even if they knew they had a flu or cold. They thought that they were being of more service to their patients then not being there for them at all.

Of course, the fact that one sneeze can send out over 40,000 droplets of water full of active viruses into the office air, and could therefor easily spread the disease to the other patients, wasn’t fully considered that big a problem. After all the thinking back then was that no one was ever going to die from a cold or flu.

But that was before H1N1 cam along. That changed things forever and it’s a different story now.

But this is a blog is about mindset not medicine so I do need to draw a connection here and so here it is.

No matter if they be they embodied in physical viruses or negative thoughts damaging factors can easily spread, populate, and infect new hosts in very similar ways. For example, in offices everywhere managers have noticed that it only takes one worker voicing negativity to bring down the well-being of the entire work group.

Sound familiar?

That to me is a clear indication that thinking systems mirror the physical system as seen in the body. But the body has an advantage. It’s got an immune system that, if maintained in health, does an excellent job of handling invading pathogens on a daily basis. Unfortunately the one corrective system that I believe is present in the mindset is itself very slow acting.

So slow in fact as to appear to not be present at all. That leaves the thinking much more susceptible to negative invaders. In fact studies show this to be true. Our daily thoughts, they report, are on average about 70% negative.

So what kind of flu are you helping to spread?

More Power to you.

This post is in response to that. It‘s also an add-on to a series of posts I had previously published beginning here.

Most people will not know what a mobius is although they might recognize it if they saw it. I have explained it in previous posts but here’s a quick refresher.

It’s an invention that, about 150 years ago, was credited to August Ferdinand Mobius. He was a professor of advanced mathematics at the University Of Lipzig where he contributed to the advancement of a very esoteric sub-field of geometry known as “topology”. When he created the first mobius strip his interest was the examination of two-dimensional forms in three dimensional space. Originally he took a strip of paper and, before joining the ends to each other, gave one end a half-twist.

When I first saw it I was a young boy of ten or eleven years old. It was in an illustrated book on mathematics and I was immediately intrigued with it.

Many years later, when I developed the H.E.R.O. eMachine together with the theory of mindset immunity, I immediately employed the mobius strip as the perfect metaphor that symbolized the key points I was attempting to communicate to the rest of the world.

What better image then a simple construct like the mobius. In an amazingly elegant way it suggests a continuous stable loop of motivation as well as infinite possibilities. For myself and for others it has become an appropriate symbol of personal transformation caused by using the H.E.R.O. eMachine format just once.

There are a few key points that I like to use the mobius strip to help me illustrate.

Key Point One: Duality Principal

I was continually invoking the idea of the double nature of humanity in my work. I’m a visual guy so I needed a physical structure with which to model the story of how the integration of both mindset and physical immunity work to improve the efficiency of the entire system.

In fact the mobius was so good at illustrating the phenomenon of transformation it was chosen by Gary Anderson in 1970 as a base for his design for the symbol for recycling. It’s still in use today.

Industry leaders, entrepreneurs, educators, and average families today need to get more out of existing resources because it’s more efficient to do so. This applies to physical as well as creative or intuitive resources as these produce results quicker and time – as they say – is money.

The idea of duality is deeply involved in what it means to be human. The idea of the two human natures, the physical and the ethereal, go back a long long time. Discussions about these elements can be traced back to the times of the great philosophers such as Aristotle and Plato.

Key Point Two: Infinity

I really like the idea of infinity as it relates to how endlessly dual immunity can work to support each of its two parts. The symbol for infinity in mathematics is called the “lemniscate”. It basically looks like a figure eight lying down on its side. Lemniscates, if drawn in three dimensions and then rendered in the third dimension as a flat band, becomes a mobius strip.

Key Point Three: Freedom

It is clear to all of us that negative thinking makes us “stuck” and unable to move forward as we should. In a story, the first ever published on the surface of a mobius strip, I told of the opportunity for freedom of mindset that transformation brings.

I like to think that the mobius is a story about potential. I tell this story often with special emphasis on the two directions that information can travel. It can go to you or it can come through you. The latter being more easily comprehended at a gut level.

So, what’s your handle? Do you have one? If so tell me about it and if it’s visual send me a picture of it. I’d love to hear from you.

Thinking is something all of us do plenty of every day.

The question is: How does our thinking effect how we “are”? (Such as our state of health for example)

Generally speaking thinking comes in just two sizes: positive and negative.

Let’s take a quick look at positive thinking first.

According to author Deepack Chopra “thoughts become biology”. If this is true then it follows that if you’re consistently thinking negatively your body will be expressing this attitude in its own state of health. Indeed patients who have a poor outlook about their recovery seem to impede the healing process taking place within them

But positive thinking patients don’t always automatically do well just because they think good thoughts.

For example, after radical bone cancer treatment, one-legged cross-Canada runner Terry Fox, had to interrupt his “Marathon Of Hope” and was again back in hospital after cancer was found in his lungs. Publicly he always said that he would soon return to finish the run but, sadly, never did. He died soon afterwards at the age of just 23.

So, does how we “think” soon become how we “are” physically?

The jury is still out and the debate rages on.

Want my two cents?

I think it’s not just thought that can appear to affect our biology but the state of our nature. A positive nature is not quite the same domain as a mind that only works to positive think on demand.

Having a positive nature is way more organic. It is a state that is established more from what you ‘feel’ inside of you than what your head can think up. Compare the two and thinking just doesn’t cut it at all.

The old maxim I often quote here is the famous mantra “Be, Do, Have”. A state of “being” is a powerful thing not subject to the rapid changes often found in our thoughts or in the attitudes formed by them. Interestingly, a positive nature is something that as very young children we almost all possess.

In my H.E.R.O. workshops conducted over the last thirty years or so, I have witnessed many participants who have declared that they felt more youthful and indeed went on to become better at being themselves. It seems that when we’re closer to a state of joy we are naturally more open to maintaining a healthy, more youthful body too.

Till next time, more power to you all.

Research shows (and I have no idea how they count this stuff) that the average person thinks about 12,000 thoughts per day. If you’re a really deep thinker it could be as much as 50,000 per day.

And how many of those many thoughts would you say are productive?

Really?

That’s what I thought.

All that thinking “produces” all right but what is produced is not always useful to our purposes is it? In fact researchers say up to 80% of our thoughts are downright negative.

So negative it’s keeping a lot of us up at night. What would that do your mindset?

Here’s a solution to getting around all that.

Have you ever noticed that when you “don’t think” about something, like playing a musical instrument or even writing a quick first draft of a blog post for example, you do better?

More dramatically, when a person who is seen as a “hero” because they spontaneously risked their own life to save another they consistently report: “I didn’t think about it. I just did it.”

When it comes to not thinking this could be one of those times when not doing something is actually way more beneficial for you and for the world. By extension, by actually doing nothing you become the change that you’d like to see in the world.

Because if you’re not thinking about what ever it is you lac (and feeling crappy about it) you’ll automatically take on an air of abundance that others will find quite refreshing – especially these days.

We’ve all heard the old saying “it’s not what happens to you but how you react to it that matters”. Indeed, reactionary thinking is often the culprit here. The universal phenomenon of taking action without thinking could be a real key to dramatic results IF it could somehow be brought to bear at the exact time (and every time) when it was needed.

That was the sort of stuff that I was looking at when, several years ago, I came up with the H.E.R.O. eMachine.

Over the past 12 months I’ve been working seven days-a-week to put together a cogent way of explaining how a stupidly simple little on-line “clinic” that, in a little as 24 hours, could form a powerful link between your intellect and a natural phenomenon that’s been living inside of you since birth.

It was a ton of work because H.E.R.O. uses your thinking (memory) to lock on to something that is in you but is outside of your physicalness (although you can feel it physically). This may sound weird but this is emerging as being closer to a new type of “immunity” than just another new thinking method.

Try and explain that one!

In any case it seems to stop all that constant mind-chatter cold in its tracks. That leaves you with thoughts that are really objective. For many it could be the first time that’s been available for a long long time.

I’m just now putting the finishing touches on a new video that will blow you away. But I’m not stopping there.

Because this is still the H.E.R.O. beta I’m going to be giving away up to 25 complete H.E.R.O. Discover eMachine personalized one-on-one sessions for the low low price of… FREE! (One session per customer is all that’s needed.)

Yes indeedy I’m not kidding.

You’ll get me personally guiding you through the process right on your own computer wherever that might be in North America.

Just the two of us for the day. Only an internet connection away.

If you can’t wait till the video is ready just comment below and I’ll get back to you to arrange your free session ASAP.

First come – first served. This offer will be gone when I reach 25 registrations.

Like Nike says: (Don’t think too much) “Just do it!”

You’ll feel better too.

..More power to you all.
I’ve heard this advice before. It was from mega-successful network marketer Mark Yarnell who authored several good books on that industry. He was saying things like ” Nothing ever happens anyway…”

Years ago I tried his advice myself and I did realize a lot more efficient use of my time. Of course I did get rid of my TV altogether so that had a lot to do with it. The reception in my area was crappy anyway and what with building a new dairy business I was always quite busy with little time to sit in front of a boob tube.

But all that was before 9/11. Today the news seems to be a lot more full of all the gritty stuff folks just love. It gives them stuff to talk about but, in reality, you’d better avoid in order to preserve your positive mindset. I understand that.

But is that the best or the only option? Is all negativity something that we should be trained to avoid at all costs?

I think not.

Not because I like negative news – I don’t – but I realize that sensational news sells and that’s why there’s plenty of it. Anything that get’s the emotions going sells. We all know that. Purchases happen because the buying response is triggered by the emotions and then is immediately backed by logic. That’s marketing 101.

I don’t really care for it myself because it sounds manipulative but… that’s how things are.

We’re human. We must live fully in the world good or bad. It’s not what we see or hear so much as what motivates us to act. If we are making choices based on how it looks we’re probably not going forward as we should.
My advice is to use the gut feel method to “see” if a decision is a good thing or not. It may not always work out to our satisfaction just then but perhaps later on we’ll see that it was for the best.

As for the news? It’s just information composed of letters and numerals which make up sounds and pictures. It’s ok to feel a well reported story emotionally but then engage your ability to detach quickly so that it remains “outside” of you.

(If you have trouble doing that then see this)

You are not the world.

You just live here.
