Photo: Morguefile.com

Today I want to talk about one of the biggest mindset stumbling blocks many of us will ever encounter. It’s all embodied in one little three-letter question: HOW?

This question may look tiny on a page but in real life it can pack a wallop of intimidation. Everything from a small crack to a huge canyon.

The difference in dimension is determined by the addition of the kinds of words we use after the word “how …?”.

Example: How can I …? (fill in the problem) How do I …? (Fill in the area of missing information) How could you …? (Fill in the situation)

The thing is with a three letter question like “How?” is that it looks benign but in fact can be wonderful or it can be woeful.

On a good day it can force inquiry by badgering us for answers. That’s great exercise in the short term but often none of those answers will be available immediately and the search can quickly escalate into a pile of hard work to satisfy that need to know.

And that takes motivation and drive that sometimes must be sustained for years on end. All the while that “HOW?” questing keeps eating on us chewing up our motivation and nullifying our drive. It’s that kind of demand for dedicated effort that weeds out a lot of us from ever feasting at the table of success.

The only reason it didn’t stop me cold was because I had made a discovery that, through its very nature, forced me to keep going. It had an astounding effect on my resilience and determination. I knew absolutely that I had to find a way to cogently describe its cause. I felt that the world needed to know.

That has kept me very future oriented even when small victories seemed far off.

Of course not everyone is going to be able to maintain their motivation over the long haul that’s a given. Success rates in anything are always consistently low.

That’s because this little question with the three letters in it can morph into an excuse to stop altogether. “I didn’t do it because… I didn’t know how; “… to get the funding; “…to find the tools I needed” “… to talk with the right people.” – just fill in the blanks with your particular situation.

I’ve personally used at least one of those a time or two and, believe me, it is a road to nowhere.

When I first became familiar with the how? question years ago it was when I started to talk about human motivation in the context of explaining the workings of the human thought process.

I’d been using a three-step model that began with the word “thought” and ended with the word “action”. In between those words was that little question but you wouldn’t recognize it because in this case it was using an alias.

Here it’s called the “analysis”. It’s an appropriate word though because the word “analysis” means “breaking down” or” taking apart” and that is precisely what it does to our self- motivation.

It is the embodiment of the dangers of the “How?” We don’t just get stuck in it we get stopped by it.

In my model I use the three stages of an idea as it progresses through the thought process: Thought – Analysis – Action. Can you guess where the most stress comes from?

If you said right in the middle you’d be right on. That is the most toxic of any of the three stages. It’s the ingredient of the destructive force of the three-letter question: “How?”

So, if you find yourself wandering in the land of the “How?” take your exit as soon as you can or use it to push yourself to new discoveries about yourself. Get into some action – any action – and you’ll soon meet with abundant satisfaction and contentment just from learning by doing.

Hey, even if you’re answers are wrong you’ll be better off then stuck in the mire of the three-letter question.

Then, if you want, you can become a teacher and show others the right path by asking them: – “Anyone here need to know how?”

More power to you my friend.
PS: Have you noticed that a lot of personal development methods no longer pack the punch they once did? Could be the times. I went ahead and invented this simple little brain tweak that makes a huge difference in leveraging your efforts for creating a better version of yourself. Want more? Millions of us engage in its use every day.

But, for many of us it’s an unrealized waste of time.

I’m talking about the burgeoning self-help or self-development, or self-improvement industry. Whatever you call it that’s the one that’s got some of the biggest most recognizable names making huge profits from it.

Names like Dr. Phil, Dr. Laura, Dr. Grey and let’s not forget Tony Robbins.

But there’s a serious flaw here and it boils down to simple physics: heat rises.

What’s that got to do with your practice of self-development techniques?

Plenty.

Most of us have tried this in the past, but if you haven’t be a good sport and play along.

Take a positive statement such as “Today is going to be the best day of my life!” Say it out loud while you stand in front of your bathroom mirror or when you’re alone in your car driving down the freeway on your way to work.

Say it repeatedly for a couple of minutes or so.

Notice how you feel. A little more perked-up maybe? No different at all?

Either way it’s a problem. If you had paid someone like Brian Tracy to instruct you to do this and nothing happened you’d be out your money. On the other hand if something did happen and you felt better you’d still lose.

“Say what?”

You’d still lose because it’s simple physics that heat rises right? Now I know that your thoughts aren’t really physical things but that doesn’t matter the rule still applies. Here’s why.

Thoughts, even good ones, originate in your head. Many thoughts added together, even if they’re repeated, form a pattern. That pattern throws off an invisible “heat,” called an attitude, that becomes a motivating force within you. The longer the thought pattern the greater the heat or attitude and the resulting strength the motivating force has.

Now stay with me here this is where it gets interesting.

This motivating force will cause you to move. It might be just a simple smile that you put on when meeting someone such as a client or your girlfriend’s father. Or it might be to boldly burst into your boss’s office to say you’re quitting because you’ve decided that life’s too short to waste your time working for him.

Doesn’t matter what it causes you to do as much as why it causes you to do it.

The motivational heat from thoughts in your head have gone downward into your body and made you act. But its effectiveness is short lived because of the physics of it.

It’s like trying to heat water by directing the flame from the top. You get poor efficiency and you use too much fuel.

You live in a world that is full of other sources of stimulation that also create attitude [heat]-producing thought patterns within you. They can conflict with existing thought patterns and often act to cancel each other out causing confusion as to which direction to take. This makes decision making more exhausting as well as time-consuming.

So you find yourself the next day back in front of your bathroom mirror with your positive affirmations again.

On and on it goes until you eventually burn out.

Doing things this way will make you one of the 95% of people who never succeed to the degree they’d like to. It’s just too much work.

The solution to all of this is to do what you do when you want to cook something in a pot. You heat it from below.

Don’t use your thoughts to create motivation instead go with your gut. Motivation from your gut (gut brain) is far more authentic. After all isn’t love based in the heart area?

Dynamic business leaders and decision makers don’t like fluff. They very often will say that their best decisions are based on perceptions that come from how a thing feels.

Try it. It’s quicker and you’ll be happier for a lot longer with less stress.

Till next time,

More power to you all

William Shakespeare made that observation about the connection between the mental state and the rate at which we are able to function some 400 years ago.

I guess things don’t change much do they? Happiness, it seems, gives us more energy, while sadness makes us feel warn out.

Who knew?

Almost all of us who have any experience with the ups and down of life that’s who. Had a rough day at work? You get home and all you want to do is crash in front of the boob tube, gobble up something quick and down some suds. What channel is the Simpson’s on again?

In contrast you may have had a great day (lucky dog!). The supervisor commented on how effective your suggestions have been and has sent off a memo to that effect to those who matter. You get home and you’re ready to party. You feel like the day passed so quickly it’s like you’ve gone through some sort of time warp or something. You stay up late talking to anybody who wants to listen.

In humans it is clear that whatever the intellect is seeing that is what it becomes. Looking at all the troubles in your world as well as the world around you? Get ready for a bout of depression. Concentrate on all the abundance and beauty in the world and you’re in nirvana (unless you’re busy driving down the freeway of course).

But here’s the problem and it’s a huge one. It’s an un-controlable up and down existence. If the condition of your state (both physical and ethereal) is dictated by what you’re looking at any given time, then that fact alone exposes a vulnerability that could have severe consequences for your health and your ability to function in the world. You simply can’t ignore all the things coming at you and deal with them at the same time.

In his book “Ageless Body, Timeless Mind” Dr Deepak Chopra details studies done that associate an increase in the decline in a steroid known as DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) with the stress one encounters in life. DHEA is thought to enhance neuron health in the brain and is in natural decline as one’s age progresses. Experiments with subjects who practice TM (Transcendental Meditation) regularly have shown some improvement in the level of DHEA retention. TM, it seems, has some real merit. It’s true that thoughts do create biology.

This study is somewhat interesting to me since my work with H.E.R.O. over the years has demonstrated that it is at least 10 times more powerful that TM. I believe that’s because, as mentioned above, you end up feeling like that which you are observing. With H.E.R.O. graduates it is simply because the results of it creates a solid confidence and happiness that appear to stay active without much reinforcement despite continued stress-producing life experience.

Distress then can be dealt with more logically when one is in a state where more intrinsic intelligence is available to speed problem solving by making better choices quicker.

Can You Help Me?

The beneficial results that I’ve been seeing with H.E.R.O. , over all the years I’ve been working with clients who have completed it, have been strictly anecdotal and so I’d like to take it a step up.

If anyone reading this has (or knows of anyone) who has access to the methods and means to do a controlled study into how H.E.R.O. might affect DEHA levels (and therefore better brain health and lower stress effects through what I now call “Positive Immunity”) I would be very open to talking with them.

This is part 3 of a series. ( Part 1 / Part 2 /)

In my last post I introduced a quote by Aristotle where he expressed his opinion about the origin of thought in the human body. The re-occurring thing that seems to crop up is a reference to the “gut” as a place where intelligence seems to have some root.

I mentioned the findings in 1993, some 2300 years later, of a “gut brain” in humans by cell biologist Dr. Michael Gershon.

Today I’d like to take you back in history once more, about 450 years to be exact, and introduce to you to a guy who also had something radical to say about the human body.

The Human Machine

The year is 1558 and Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci works diligently away in his studio in Milan Italy.

Oh, you’ve heard of him?

Not surprising, since today he is regarded to be one of the greatest painters of all time and perhaps the most diversely talented person ever to have lived. He explored the fields of science, mathematics, engineering, inventing, and anatomy just to name a few.

Leonardo was a man of conviction and, even though he lived in a time when the church was the real power in society, when he had an opinion he gave it voice. He once declared that the human physiology, the “human machine” as he called it, could be improved. That got him into some serious hot water with the church brass. He was given an order to keep such comments to himself… or else!

He may have toned it down a bit but he moved forward anyway by making a few sketches in an attempt to try a few ideas out. One at least looks remarkably similar to today’s hang glider. Poor Leonardo, although he was right he was wrong. He concentrated on physical add-ons not inner-skills. What seemed to have escaped his enormous genius was simply the nature of the improvement that could potentially be made.

He may have been close about his observation of the physical body as a machine though. Others have since come to reference it in similar ways. In fact, how the modern day computer ‘thinks’ could qualify, however loosely, as another mirror reflection of ourselves as a machine.

But hold on to that thought because, if you can stand it, I’m going to quickly whip you forward again to 1960 and another man skilled in matters of medicine who also had similar impressions about the human body as a machine.

I’ll tell you more about him in my next post.

More power to you my friend.

David Parsons (aka Mobiusman)
